The implication is that, because society is functioning smoothly with gender stratification, such stratification is acceptable and efforts should not be made to change the arrangement. According to Structural Functionalist perspective, women being subordinate to men allows the wage-earners to function smoothly as everyone in the society knows his or her respective position in the hierarchy. Gender inequality offers a good illustration. Structural Functionalism explains that the way society is organized is the most natural and efficient way for it to be organized. However, any group large enough to be a social institution is included in Structural Functionalist thinking, from religious values to sports clubs and everything in between. Merton argued that functionalism is about the more static or concrete aspects of society, institutions like government or religions. Thus one of the key ideas in Structural Functionalism is that society is made-up of groups or institutions, which are cohesive, share common norms, and have a definitive culture. Education, for example, has several important functions in a society, such as socialization, and learning.įunctionalism also states that society is like an organism, made up of different parts that work together. Each social structure has social functions, or consequences for the operation of society as a whole. And certain rituals, such as a handshake or complex religiousĬeremonies, give structure to our everyday lives. Social structures give shape to our lives - for example, in families, the community, and through religious organizations. It asserts that our lives are guided by social structures, which are relatively stable patterns of social behavior. The structural-functional approach is a perspective in sociology that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. 3 Modern Examples of Structural Functionalist Oriented Researchĭetailed Description. when it was known to the Babylonians as The Raven. Corvus is an ancient constellation dating back to at least 1,100 B.C. The Crow and the CupĬontinuing downward, past the large constellation Virgo, we come to the compact figures of Corvus, the Crow, and Crater, the Cup. With your eyes alone, you will see only about five stars in the cluster, but even small binoculars will reveal several more. However, the constellation is also home to the Coma Berenices Star Cluster, which is highlighted on our map. Like Leo Minor, Coma Berenices consists of just three main stars. When he did, Berenice lopped off her golden locks, and astronomers of the time declared that they would be forever preserved in the night sky. It seems Berenice pledged to cut her long, flowing hair if her husband, King Ptolemy III, returned safely from battle. Moving to the east (leftward), we find Coma Berenices, Berenice’s Hair, named for Queen Berenice of ancient Egypt. You’ll have to make good use of your imagination because only three of Leo Minor’s stars are easily visible, arranged in a much-flattened triangle. Just above Leo lies the Smaller Lion, Leo Minor. With Leo clearly in view, we can now make our way to the first few Minor Leaguers. Once you’ve spotted the Sickle, you should have little trouble tracing out the rest of Leo, culminating with bright Denebola, whose name comes from an Arabic phrase meaning “tail of the lion.” The Smaller Lion and Berenice’s Hair The most distinctive part of Leo is the Sickle asterism, a pattern of six stars anchored by Regulus, the 21st brightest star in the night sky. When you look to the south on April evenings, mighty Leo, the Lion, dominates the scene. We recommend adjusting the entire layer's opacity. You can adjust opacity through a layer's Fill properties, as well as through the Layer property. Figma will apply a dissolve transition to animate the layer's opacity. Set the opacity of the layer to 0%, instead of toggling the layer visibility. You can adjust opacity to make an object to appear or disappear between frames. Smart animate can also recognize a layer or object's opacity. It will then animate the object moving from its current position, to its position in the destination frame. Positionįigma recognizes if an object's location, the x and y co-ordinates, have changed. If an object changes in size between frames, Figma will animate it shrinking or growing. We've isolated each of the properties we support below, so you know what to expect. It's likely that more than one of an object's properties will change between Frames. You can apply smart animate to entire objects or Components, as well as individual layers within a Component or group. Figma takes into account both the layer's name and where it sits within the hierarchy.įor layers that match between frames, Figma recognizes what's changed and applies transition to animate between them. To those whose work is just now being considered essential, thank you for being heroes.Necessary cookies are absolutely essential for the website to function properly. This pandemic has taught me to appreciate the many heroes who are risking their lives and whose work allows society to function as smooth as possible even during a crisis. I was never taught to view their work as glorious, or heroic. I realize that these are also the people whose work I typically take for granted. Eventually, I count over 100 people who without them, my daily life would come to a halt. The grocery store clerk, the gas station worker, the bank teller, the IT staff, the mail(wo)man, truck drivers…. Since reflecting on how COVID-19 has changed our understanding of what is essential, I began counting the people whose work allows me to function daily. I wonder how next kindergarten career day will go… This pandemic has humanized professions, making me recognize that the grocery store clerk, like the doctor helps people survive. Those whose work is often thought of as a means to an end, now preform lifesaving duties. Bank tellers who previously served a mundane role, have become points of access to much needed cash and liquidity.ĭuring a crisis what we consider essential puts a new perspective on glory and heroism. As a result, computer salesmen, like my father, now come home recounting stories of customers calling them their heroes in times of crisis. While grocery stores continue to operate, many people are now scrambling to purchase electronics to ensure that they stay connected amid a temporarily virtualized society. Going to the grocery store, I felt compelled to thank the clerks, much as I feel compelled to thank soldiers, for putting themselves on the line to serve others. In times of social distancing, only those that are considered “essential” continue to go to work putting their lives at risk for the benefit of society. They have become the heroes of some of the largest institutions (Duke included). Information Technology teams who typically go under the radar, are now at the forefront of operational efficiency. Zoom and other virtual meeting platforms have extended past the university touching nearly every aspect of life. In times of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems much of the world is turned on its head. At that time, we didn’t understand that circumstance creates glory, not position alone. While people reported wanting to be doctors, lawyers, firefighters and other heroic careers, I found only a few cases of people wanting to be what we considered non-heroic. Looking back at my kindergarten yearbook confirms my memory. How could anyone find this interesting, my classmate whispered to me. Why would anyone choose to handle money or machines, or help purchase food when they could be a hero and help people instead? One classmate had a confused look on his face when he heard the bank teller parent talk about interest. As they described their jobs, my classmates and I found their presentations far less glorious. Then, the parents who were bank tellers, computer salesmen, and grocery store clerks presented to my kindergarten class. As kindergarteners, we had our lives planned. Almost all of my classmates excitedly exclaimed I want to be a hero when I grow up, so I will be. Their brief presentations concluded with a much deserved applause from the class. They would tell tales of their time on the job saving lives. Professions like police officer, firefighter, soldiers, lawyers and doctors would be considered heroes. I recall career day in kindergarten, when parents would come into class and talk about their jobs. MRI-based semi-quantitative scoring systems are the HOAMS, HIMRISS and SHOMRI systems 10,20-22. For a simplified acquisition, 3D imaging and secondary oblique and radial reconstructions are recommended. Radial and axial images are of additional use for the assessment of femoral head-neck junction and acetabular anatomy in the case of femoroacetabular impingement associated with cam and/or pincer morphology 10. Images should be acquired in coronal sagittal and oblique axial planes 10. In addition to the 3D visualization of acetabular and femoral head-neck morphology, MRI allows the assessment and semi-quantitative evaluation of a large variety of tissue abnormalities not only of the articular cartilage and/or the acetabular labrum but also of the bone marrow, the ligaments and the synovium 10,18-23. CTĬomputed tomography provides information on the 3D assessment of acetabular and proximal femoral anatomy and can be used for surgical planning in cases of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) or acetabular dysplasia 18,19 or to assess the amount of bone stock 19. In addition, it can be used for image-guided injections 18. Ultrasound can depict joint effusions and synovitis by increased synovial vascularization and can detect osteophytes. Recommended scoring systems are the Kellgren and Lawrence score and the OARSI atlas 10. The radiological classification systems that are used for the assessment of osteoarthritis of the hip, the Kellgren and Lawrence score 14, the Croft score 15 and the Tönnis classification are all susceptible to subjectivity, but the first is apparently the most reliable 10,16.Īnother semi-quantitative method, which does not give a definition of osteoarthritis by grade, but grades different features of osteoarthritis as femoral and acetabular osteophyte formation as well as superior and medial joint space narrowing is the OARSI atlas 10,17. The minimal joint space width is measured between the femoral head and the nearest part of the acetabular sourcil (representing the weight-bearing surface) 29. ESR <20 mm/h) can be used as an indicator of osteoarthritis 13. Hip joint space width ≤2 mm or <2.5 mm 10-12 or the combination of joint space narrowing with the presence of osteophytes, in particular, in the absence of any elevated inflammatory markers (e.g. Plain radiographs of the hip are a cheap, widely available and easily obtained modality and their interpretation in the evaluation of osteoarthritis is not as difficult as other imaging modalities 8-10.įor the indication of osteoarthritis of the hip, an anteroposterior radiograph of the hip and a cross-table lateral or frog-leg lateral view are obtained. Subchondral cyst formation and remodeling of the articular surfaces or deformity are seen in more advanced stages. General features are osteophyte formation, joint space narrowing and sclerosis of the subchondral bone plate. Osteoarthritis of the hip can be classified into primary and secondary, depending on whether it is due to a known predisposing factor or not. iatrogenic, e.g. multiple intra-articular steroid injections. The disease not only affects the hyaline cartilage, which loses its structural integrity due to composition changes but also involves the other tissues of the joint including the subchondral bone, the joint capsule and the synovium as well as the ligaments and the periarticular muscles 1. This arises from an imbalance between the destruction and repair of the affected tissues. Osteoarthritis is characterized by an active progressive alteration of the whole synovial joint, due to a combination of mechanical, inflammatory and metabolic factors. Other symptoms include locking, grinding and joint instability, fatigue and pain-related psychological stress 1,8. It can be associated with stiffness particular in the morning or after rest. The pain can be worse at night, at rest or with strenuous activity, reducing the range of motion and limiting walking distance. Patients usually experience slowly progressive hip pain, or hip-related groin pain radiating into the thigh, buttocks or knee. high impact sports (football, handball, hockey, wrestling, weight-lifting, and long-distance running).repetitive stress and mechanical overload.Risk factorsĪttributes, characteristics or exposures that increase the likelihood of developing osteoarthritis of the hip are 3-5,26: The lifetime risk of symptomatic hip osteoarthritis in people reaching the age of 85 years was estimated to be as high as 25% in certain regions 2. Reported prevalence varies in different studies and is also subject to geographic conditions. Women are more commonly affected than men. The hip is the third most common joint affected by osteoarthritis after the knee and the hand 1. Other strategies involve the smart partner and the context of the communication. The prayer concludes with a sublime invitation and promise: “That they may always have his Spirit to be with them” ( Moroni 4:3). Take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ. Are we willing to serve and participate? Are we willing to change? Are we willing to address our weaknesses? Are we willing to reach out and bless others? Are we willing to trust the Savior?Īs the promises are stated and as we partake, we confirm in our hearts that we are willing to: This phrase has so much potential power for us. The prayers introduce the covenants with the phrase “that they are willing” ( Moroni 4:3). The prayers explain that we partake of the bread in remembrance of the body of the Son, which He gave as a ransom to qualify all for resurrection, and we drink of the water in remembrance of the blood of the Son, which He freely shed so that we might be redeemed on condition of repentance. They remind us of the sacrifice of the Savior and that He can help us to become holy. The bread and water are blessed and sanctified to our souls. Our sacrament experience can be enhanced when we arrive well before the meeting and ponder as the prelude music is played. We can then look forward to the opportunity the sacrament provides to remember His sacrifice and renew our commitments to all the covenants we have made. In our preparation, our hearts become broken as we express gratitude for Christ’s Atonement, repent of our mistakes and shortcomings, and ask for the Father’s help in our continuing journey to become more like Him. Participation in the sacrament ordinance provides an opportunity to more fully yield our hearts and souls to God. King Benjamin taught that “the natural man is an enemy to God, … and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord” ( Mosiah 3:19). Of necessity, it includes trials and challenges that provide opportunities for us to change and grow. Mortality is an essential gift in our journey to become like our Heavenly Father. Saturday may be a good time to contemplate our spiritual progress and preparation. We can begin our preparation for the sacrament well before sacrament meeting begins. I invite all of us to consider five ways to increase the impact and power of our regular participation in the sacred ordinance of the sacrament, an ordinance that can help us become holy. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you” ( 3 Nephi 18:11). The Savior taught: “This shall ye always do to those who repent and are baptized in my name and ye shall do it in remembrance of my blood, which I have shed for you, that ye may witness unto the Father that ye do always remember me. I could feel the calm and reassuring influence of the Holy Ghost as my father contemplated the Savior’s love for us. He sometimes had to pause to control his emotions before completing the prayer.Īs a five-year-old, I could not understand the full meaning of what was being said or done however, I knew something special was occurring. Often his voice trembled as he felt the Spirit. I remember the feelings I had as he humbly and carefully read the words of the sacrament prayers. Between 10 and 15 people attended our branch, and my father, one of three priesthood holders, regularly had the opportunity to bless the sacrament. One of my earliest memories is of sacrament meetings held in our home in Warrnambool, Australia. So you may want to plan for less expansions being available throughout the chapter. While planning for Woodelves in Elvenar was flexible with the layout, lack of expansions early on may lead to insufficient mana production. And others were spread out throughout the chapter. In fact, 2 of the province expansions became available after the chapter was completed. The problem is, you don’t get access to these from the beginning. I mean, 18 Willows is likely to be an overkill, but we’ll adjust the plan as we go.Īftermath : Well, I’ve got 8 extra expansions – 3 from research, 1 premium, and 4 from provinces. Backup plan?Īlso, if I won’t get all the 9 extra expansions that’s OK too – I will just be running with fewer Willows. Basically, all the new expansions are occupied by Weeping Willows, so when I open a new expansion I can just plunk an extra Willow right there, and that’s it. Timing on these is uncertain, but the good news is that this layout design is pretty flexible for that. So there you have it, I expect to get 3-6 extra expansions during Woodelves chapter.
